Notes

John Brough

The birth of John Brough is listed as being 30 December 1776 in a "Family Record" contained in a "New Testament" Family Bible, printed in 1870.  Copies of this Family Record are in possession of the NBFO and RBFO.  Also, the birthdate and birthplace of John Brough is listed in the LDS Manti Temple Endowment Records (FHL Film # 15985), which states that when his son (John) performed the proxy endowment for his father (on 7 May 1889 in the Manti Temple) the recorder listed John's birth as having taken place on 30 December 1776 in Lincolnshire, England.

The christening of "John Bruff" is listed in the parish register of Mareham-Le-Fen, Lincolnshire (FHL Film # 1541963, Item #1), which states that he was christened on 30 December 1776 as the son of "Thos. and Elizabeth Bruff".  Also, the christening of "John Bruff" is listed in the IGI (via LDS Patron submission).

The 1841 Census lists John Brough as being about 63 years old (born about 1778), born in Lincolnshire, working as a "Laborer", and residing with his youngest daughter, Caroline, and his daughter Mary [Ann] and her husband, William Curtis (age 26 and a "Bricklayer"), in Caythorpe, Horncastle, Lincolnshire. (Note: John's wife, Julia, is not listed with him in this census.)

The 1851 British Census lists John Brough (who is mistakenly indexed as "John Shough") as being about 75 years old (born about 1776), born in Mareham Le Fen.  Also, at the time of the 1851 Census, John Brough was listed as "Receiving Parochial Relief", and residing as a "Lodger" in Horncastle.

The marriage certificate of John Brough and Ann Winter Fanthorp, and the marriage certificate of Johon Dawes and Caroline Brough, both state that John Brough (chr.1776--and the father of John Brough and Caroline Brough) was a "Gardener".

The death certificate of John Brough (in possession of the NBFO and RBFO) shows that he died on 16 February 1854, age 74, in Horncastle, Lincolnshire.

The burial of John Brough is listed in the British National Burial Index, which stated that John Brough was about age "74" (or born about 1780) at the time of his burial on 20 February 1854 at St. Mary, Horncastle, Lincolnshire.

Research Note:  On 26 September 2007, Jessie Spisak, a professional genealogist in Salt Lake City, Utah, wrote the following to the NBFO and RBFO:  "The most interesting part of my [re]search developed as I traced the children of John [Brough] and Julia through census records.  For whatever reason, the family is never living together in one place during the periods in which the censuses were taken, which suggests that the children were forced to live among relatives.  The 1841 census, as we know, lists John and Caroline (whom I believe to be John's granddaughter), and a few possibilities exist for John, who seems to be living among random people.  Harriett is also living amongest John Sharpe and a variety of others.  The most complete census we have is the one that follows: The 1851 census lists John and Caroline Brough as visiting Harriet Brough and her husband James Snarr.  Harriet has named one of her children Mary Ann, so this slightly connects four of the primary Broughs who were supposedly born to John and Julia."

"John Brough" is listed in FamilySearch Tree, PID#: LHDY-VLW.

Jane Marshall

The christening of "Jane Marshall" is listed in the parish register of Hemingby (FHL Film # 1541961, Item #8) which states that "Jane Marshall daughter [of] Francis and Mary Marshall" was christened on 6 February 1785.  Also, the christening of "Jane Marshall" is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film # 504242), and was verified by Kathryn Stout, a professional genealogist in England, in May 2009, as follows: "Jane daughter of Francis and Mary Marshall, [christened] 6th February 1785 [in Hemingby parish]".

The birthplace of Jane (Julia) Marshall is listed in the LDS Manti Temple Endowment Records (FHL Film # 170437), which states that when her daughter, Harriet, performed her LDS proxy endowment, the recorder listed "Julia's" birthplace (but no birthdate) as being: "West Ashby, Lincoln, England".  (Geographical Note:  The traveling distance between West Ashby--where Jane (Julia) Marshall was reportedly born, and Hemingby parish--where Jane Marshall was christened, is only about three miles.)  Also, "Julia" Marshall's LDS proxy baptism was performed on 10 November 1869, and her LDS endowment on 7 May 1889, both in the LDS Manti Temple.

The approximate death date of Jane Marshall has been stated by Kathryn Stout of England (in May 2009) as follows: "We know that Jane, Julia or Judith Brough or Bruff died sometime after the birth of [her last child] Caroline (Carrie) Brough on the 10th April 1830 and the start of Civil Registration in July 1937."

Research Note of 2003:  In 2003, Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist living in Utah, stated: "We originally turned to this family desiring to determine to learn more about Julia Marshall his wife.  We did not find their marriage, nor a burial for her.  We did learn that she is twice listed as Jane in parish registers.  We do not know when she was born or where, but assume she was born about 1778-1795 probably in Horncastle or West Ashby.  We searched the parish register for both and found no entry for a Julia, Judith or Jane Marshall. We did note in Horncastle that parish registers are damaged and missing pages in the 1790's which may explain the lack of finding her christening. Unlike the name Brough which is not found (except John in 1854), the name Marshall is very common in Horncastle (and West Ashby)."

Research Note of 2008:  The 1841 Census does not list Jane (Julia) (Brough) Marshall as residing with her husband John Brough in Horncastle.  In fact, the 1841 Census only lists John Brough and his youngest daughter, Caroline, as residing together.  Could Jane (Julia) have died prior to the 1841 Census, or was she seperated or divorced from John at the time the 1841 Census was taken?  Interestingly, the online Utah Death Certificate of Caroline (Brough) Dawes, the youngest child of John and Julia Brough, states that her mother's surname was "Fenn", not Marshall.

Research Note of 2009:  Jane Marshall, who was christened on 6 February 1785 in Hemingby, Lincolnshire, is probably the same Jane (Julia or Judith) who married John Brough (1776-1854) in about 1817. This assumption is based on these three reasons: 1) Jane Marshall was identified as "Jane" Marshall in the christening records of two of her children: Harriet Brough and John Brough; 2) Three decades of research (by several different genealogists) of parish records in and around Mareham Le Fen, Horncastle and West Ashby in Lincolnshire have only revealed one christening that could possibly be associated with Jane Marshall who was born between 1778-1795: and that is the Jane Marshall who was christened on 6 February 1785 in Hemingby; 3) Jane Marshall, christened in Hemingby in 1785 named her first child and daughter "Elizabeth", possibly after the name of her younger sister, Elizabeth, and she also named her third child "Mary Ann" possibly after the name of her mother and other sibling, Mary.

Marriage Notes for John Brough and Jane Marshall-4799

Research Note:  On May 24, 2003, Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist based in Utah, wrote the following to NBFO officials: "Our first goal was to find the marriage of John and Julia.  We were very disappointed that we did not find it.  We also searched various indexes for Lincolnshire and various Internet sites, but nothing was turned up."

Elizabeth Brough

The christening of Elizabeth Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film # 504524--which is the Bishop's Transcript for Newark, Nottinghamshire), which states that she was christened on 15 October 1818 in Newark Upon Trent, Nottingham, England, and that her parents were "John Brough" and "Judith", and that John Brough was a "Postboy".

Occupational Note: A "Postboy" is described as follows: "Post Boy: a Postilion, rode mounted on one of the drawing horses of a post chaise or coach.  ...A Postilion drove a post chaise or coach mounted on one of the drawing horses. The horses were referred to as Post-Horses. The occupation went out of fashion in Britain as railways grew in popularity." (Source: https://www.familyresearcher.co.uk/glossary/Dictionary-of-Old-Occupations-jobs-beginning-P6.html )

Geographical Note:  The travel distance between Newark Upon Trent, Nottinghamshire--where Elizabeth Brough was christened, and Horncastle, Lincolnshire--where Elizabeth's next younger sister, Harriet, was christened--is about 41 miles.

Research Note:  The IGI (via LDS Patron submission--with most entries having no references or sources) contains several entries for Elizabeth (Eliza) Brough, some of which suggest that Elizabeth possibly died between 1824 and 1828, and others which suggest that there were two Elizabeth's born to John and Julia Brough: one born and christened in 1818 and another born in 1825.  The Bishop's Transcript for Newark (FHL Film # 504524--as the FHL does not have the Parish Registers for Newark), and the Parish Registers for Horncastle (FHL Film # 1542140, Item 5) and West Ashby (FHL Film # 1541956, Item #2) needs to be carefully reviewed for the period 1817 to 1830 to see if there were actually two Elizabeth's born to John and Julia Brough and if so when and where they died.

In August 2011, John M. Brough investigated and documented the following historical information about John Henry Brough, as obtained from Millennial Star publications:  John Henry Brough served an LDS Mission to the British Isles during 1896 and 1898.  He arrived in Liverpool, England, on 5 March 1896.  He was then assigned to the Bradford District, Leeds Conference area, where he apparently spent most or all of his mission until he was released on 5 May 1898.  Upon his release he (along with two other missionaries) apparently visited areas of England and/or "the Continent" before returning home.  Interestingly, Anna Dawes was baptized into the LDS Church on 18 June 1898, and then married John Henry Brough on 7 July 1898.  Therefore, it is possible that John Henry Brough visited Anna's family, helped convert and/or baptize her, and then as a couple they left England for Utah.

Anna Dawes

RBFO researchers obtained the birthdate of this individual from Jerald & Gayle Fawcett of Bountiful, Utah.  The birthplace of this individual was obtained from census reports.  In addition, the online FreeBMD was reviewed for correctness of name, birthdate (by quarter) and general  birthplace.

In the 1861 Census, Anna Dawes is listed as being about 5 years old (born about 1856), born in Littleham, Devon, and living with her parents, John and Caroline Dawes, and four siblings (Thomas Dawes, Mary Elizabeth Dawes, Caroline A. Thomas Brough

The christening of "Thomas Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (from the Bishop's Transcript, FHL Film # 504765), which states that he was christened on 11 November 1725 in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, England, and that his parents were Thomas Brough and Martha.

January-May 2007 Research Note:  Earlier research suggested that Thomas Brough (Broof) who married Elizabeth Seamon in 1773 was the same Thomas Brough who was christened on 22 January 1750 in Coningsby, Lincolnshire.  However, further research revealed that this was not the case, as the Thomas Brough who was christened on 22 January 1750 died a couple of years later and was buried on 29 Oct 1752 in Coningsby. (See FHL Film # 1541959.)  Also, another Thomas Brough (Bruff), christened on 13 January 1763 in Coningsby, would have been too young to be married in 1773.  In addition, it was suggested earlier (in 1998) that Thomas Brough (Broof) who married Elizabeth Seamon in 1773 could have been the Thomas Brough who was christened on 27 April 1733 in Sibsey, Lincolnshire.  However, this Thomas Brough died at about age "34" (as listed in the British National Burial Index) and was buried in Boston, Lincolnshire on 18 February 1767.  Currently, RBFO researchers believe that the Thomas Brough who married Elizabeth Seamon was the same Thomas Brough who was christened on 11 November 1725 in Spilsby, Lincolnshire.

Geographical Note:  The traveling distance between Spilsby, Lincolnshire--where Thomas Brough was christened in 1725, and Mareham Le Fen--where Thomas Brough was married in 1773, is less than 10 miles.

Elizabeth Simons

The christening of "Elizabeth Simons" is listed in the parish records of West Ashby, Lincolnshire (FHL Film # 1541956, Item #2), which states that she was christened on 7 March 1736 in West Ashby, Lincolnshire, and that her parents were "William Simons" and "Elizabeth".

The christening of "Elizabeth Symons" is listed in the Bishop's Transcripts of West Ashby, Lincolnshire (FHL Film # 421896), which states that she was christened on 7 March 1736 in West Ashby, Lincolnshire, and that her parents were "William Symons" and "Eliz".

LDS descendants baptized "Elizabeth Seamon" as "Elizabeth Brough" on 9 March 1870 in the Endowment House and again on 7 May 1889 in the Manti Temple.

Research Note:  According to Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist in Utah in 1998: "We searched the parish registers of Mareham Le Fen and found her [Elizabeth Simons, burial] - 'Elizabeth Bruff aged 65 (buried) March 8th 1799.' Using age 65 from the 1799 burial year we have a calculated birth year of 1734.  A search of the nearby parishes reveal the only possible christening for Elizabeth in the parish of West Ashby. 'Elizabeth daughter of Wm Simons & Elizabeth his wife March 7th 1736'."

Research Note:  According to Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist in Utah in 1998: "The name Simons has been found to be spelled Simons, Symons, Seamon and Seaman.  In the parish of West Ashby from 1722-1735 there are two Simons having children "

Reseach Note:  According to Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist in Utah in 1998: "William [Trout] and Elizabeth [Simons] had children born and christened in Mareham Le Fen from 1757 to 1764.  The last child Rebecca was christened on 4 March 1764.  Ten days later her father William is buried, on 14 March 1764.  Elizabeth now has four very young children to raise.  A very difficult position for a young mother to be in at this time in England. She probably had no skills, no trade and probably can not depend on family to help.  Often a woman's only course is to quickly marry again whereby a man can provide security and welfare to her own children."

Marriage Notes for Thomas Brough and Elizabeth Simons-4805

The marriage of "Thomas Broof" and "Elizabeth Trought" is listed in the parish register of Mareham-Le-Fen, Lincolnshire (FHL Film # 1541963, Item #1), which states that they were married by Banns on 26 May 1773, that the forthcoming marriage was "published in this Church" on the "2nd, 9th, [and] 23rd of May 1773", that Thomas Broof was of "this Parish" and a "Singleman", and that "Elizabeth Trought" was of "this Parish" and a "Widow".  The marriage was witnessed by John Draton and William Ostler.  Also, the marriage of Thomas Brough (Broof) and Elizabeth Seamon (Trought/Trout) is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program), and can be found as follows in the Bishop's Transcript for Mareham Le Fen on FHL Film # 504572: "Thos Broof and Eliza Trought both of this parish, June 1 [1773]."

Zakarias Trout

The christening of "Zakarias Trout" is listed in the parish register of Mareham-Le-Fen, Lincolnshire (FHL Film # 1541963, Item #1), which states that he was christened on 19 June 1768 as the "Bastard son of Eliz. Trout".

Research Note:  According to Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist in Utah in 1998: "It appears that Elizabeth had a child sometime after William [Trout] died [in 1764] and before her marriage to Thomas Brough [in 1773].  On the 17th of December 1772, 'Mary a daughter of Eliz. Trout' is buried.  A few months later she is married to Thomas [Brough] in May 1773." (See Bishop's Transcript for Mareham Le Fen, FHL Film # 504572.)
