Edward Worsdale

At the time of his christening, Edward Worsdale was "illegitimate" and his mother was Eliza Worsdale of Spratslade (see Blurton Parish Register: FHL Film # 1040829; or FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, vol. 99).

In the 1841 Census, Edward Worsdale is listed as being about 14 years old (born about 1827), born in Staffordshire, and working as a "Potter".

In the 1851 Census, Edward Worsdale is listed as being about 23 years old (born about 1828), born in Spratslade, Trentham, Staffordshire, and working as a "Potter Ovenman".

The 1852 marriage of "Edward Worsdale" and "Mary Ann Brough" is listed in the parish register of Blurton, Staffordshire, England (FHL Film # 1040829, Item #11, and FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, vol. 99, page 55), which states that their marriage was Banns and took place on 3 August 1852 in Blurton, Staffordshire; that Edward Worsdale was of "full age" and a "Bachelor" and "Oven Man Potter" of "Blurton" and that his father was "Stephen Bond"; and that Mary Ann Brough was of "full age" and a "Spinster" of "Blurton" and that her father was "Richard Brough" a "Miner".  The marriage was witnessed by Stephen Warrilow and Mary Warrilow.

According to Alan Barlow (alan.barlow21@tiscali.co.uk): Edward Worsdale is in the 1861 Census at Spratslade, Blurton, Staffordshire, as a "Potter", and in the 1871 Census at the same place as a "Potter's Placer".  After his death, Mary Ann is listed in the 1881 Census and the 1891 Census.

The burial of Edward Worsdale is listed in the Dresden Parish Register (FHL Film # 1470944), which states that he was "of Spratslade" and "46 years of age"--which corresponds with his christening year in 1827.

Note:  The family of Edward Worsdale was living at Spratslade when Ann Ellen, Priscilla, William and Stephen were christened, and living in Dresdon when Nathan and Samuel were christened.  Edward Worsdale's occupation was a "Potter".


Marianne Brough

The christening of "Marianne Brough" is listed in the parish register of St. John, Longton (FHL Film # 1471087, Item #1), which states that she was christened on 13 November 1831 as the daughter of Richard and Jane Brough of Lane End, and that Richard Brough was a "Collier".

Mary Ann Brough is listed as being about 9 years old in the 1841 Census.

In the 1851 Census, "Mary A. Brough" is listed as being 19 years old (born about 1832), born in Trentham, working as a "Potters Painter", unmarried, and residing with her parents, Richard and Jane Brough, and five siblings, on Stone Road in Blurton, Staffordshire.

The 1852 marriage of "Edward Worsdale" and "Mary Ann Brough" is listed in the parish register of Blurton, Staffordshire, England (FHL Film # 1040829, Item #11, and FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, vol. 99, page 55), which states that their marriage was Banns and took place on 3 August 1852 in Blurton, Staffordshire; that Edward Worsdale was of "full age" and a "Bachelor" and "Oven Man Potter" of "Blurton" and that his father was "Stephen Bond"; and that Mary Ann Brough was of "full age" and a "Spinster" of "Blurton" and that her father was "Richard Brough" a "Miner".  The marriage was witnessed by Stephen Warrilow and Mary Warrilow.

The burial of Mary Ann (Brough) Worsdale is listed in the Dresden Parish Register (FHL Film # 1470944), which states that she was "of Worsdale Place, Florence" and "age 59".  The burial date of Mary Ann puts her birth year at 1834 and married at 18 years of age to Edward (who, according to his burial date, would have been 25 years old).

According to Alan Barlow (alan.barlow21@tiscali.co.uk): Edward Worsdale is in the 1861 Census at Spratslade, Blurton, Staffordshire, as a "Potter", and in the 1871 Census at the same place as a "Potter's Placer".  After his death, Mary Ann is listed in the 1881 Census and the 1891 Census.

Stephen Worsdale

In August 2007, the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of Stephen Worsdale from England, which stated that he was born on 21 May 1853 in Spratslade, Trentham, Staffordshire, and that his father was Edward Worsdale, a Potter, and his mother was "Mary Ann Worsdale formerly Brough".

The burial of Stephen Worsdale is listed in the Blurton Parish Register (FHL Film # 1040829), as an "infant" on the 12th of June 1853.


Edward Worsdale

The birth Edward Worsdale is listed in the online FreeBMD as having taken place during the December quarter (October-December) of 1856 in the district of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

The christening of Edward Worsdale is listed in the British Vital Records Index.

In the 1881 Census, Edward is listed as being 25 years old (born about 1856), born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, and working as a "Potters Placer".

The 1901 burial of Edward Worsdale is listed in the Dresden Parish Register (FHL Film # 1470944), which states that died in the "North Stafford Infirmary" at "age 44"--which, when compared to his listed in the 1881 Census--confirms that he was born about 1856/1857.

Research Note:  There is no christening for Edward Worsdale in the Dresden or Blurton Parish Registers.


Ann Ellen Worsdale

The birth of Ann Ellen Worsdale is listed in the online Free BMD as having taken place during the September quarter (July-September) of 1858 in the district of Cheadle, Staffordshire.

The christening of Ann Ellen Worsdale is listed in the Blurton Parish Register (FHL Film # 1470944).

The burial of Ann Ellen Worsdale is listed in the Dresden Parish Register (FHLF Film #1470944), which states that she was "of Spratslade" and "14 months old", which means she was born about  mid-1858.

Samuel Birks

The birth and christening of "Samuel Birks" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 7566681), which states that he was born on 13 February 1865 and christened on 13 January 1870 at St. John's church in Longton, Staffordshire, England, and that his parents were "Samuel Birks" and "Jane".

The 1884 marriage of "Samuel Birks" and "Annie Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 1470945, Item #9), which states that they were married by Banns on 24 May 1884 at St. Paul church in Edensor, Staffordshire, England; that Samuel Birks was "20" years old (born about 1864) and a "Bachelor" and "Potter" of "Heathcote Road" and that his father was "Samuel Birks" a "Potter"; and that Annie Brough was "18" years old (born about 1866) and a "Spinster" and "Dress Maker" of "Edensor Road" and that her father was "William Brough" a "Innkeeper".  The marriage was witnessed by William Brough and Fredilina Birks.


Ann Brough

In November 2012 the Brough Family Organization obtained a copy of the birth certificate of Ann Brough from England, which stated that she was born on 16 September 1866 in Bagnall Street, Longton, Staffordshire, and that her father was William Brough, a Beer seller, and that her mother was "Elizabeth Brough formerly Wootton".

The christening of Ann Brough is listed in the parish register of St. James, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471085, Item #8), which states that she was christened on 7 October 1866 as the daughter of William of Elizabeth Brough of Bagnall Street, and that William Brough was a Publican.

In the 1871 Census, Annie Brough is as being 5 years old (born about 1866), born in Longton, Staffordshire, and residing as a "daughter"--which should have been recorded as a "grand-daughter", with her grandparents, George and Harriet Brough, in Stone Road, Trentham, Staffordshire.

The 1884 marriage of "Samuel Birks" and "Annie Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 1470945, Item #9), which states that they were married by Banns on 24 May 1884 at St. Paul church in Edensor, Staffordshire, England; that Samuel Birks was "20" years old (born about 1864) and a "Bachelor" and "Potter" of "Heathcote Road" and that his father was "Samuel Birks" a "Potter"; and that Annie Brough was "18" years old (born about 1866) and a "Spinster" and "Dress Maker" of "Edensor Road" and that her father was "William Brough" a "Innkeeper".  The marriage was witnessed by William Brough and Fredilina Birks.

The 1839 birth of "William Henry Brough" is listed in the online GRO Index and Staffordshire BMD, which combined states that his birth was registered in October-December 1839 in Trentham subdistrict, Stone district, Staffordshire, England, and that his mother's surname was "Warren".

The 1849 christening of "William Henry Brough" apparently took place when he was about nine years old (so he was born about 1840) and is listed in the parish register of St. James, Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1471085, Item #7), which states that he was christened on 27 May 1849 as the son of "George and Harriette Brough" of "Stone Road" and that George Brough was a "Collier".

In the 1841 Census, William Brough is listed as being 1 year old (born about 1840), born in Staffordshire, and residing with his parents, George and Harriett Brough, and apparent grandmother Ann Brough, in Stone Road, Blurton, Staffordshire.

In the 1851 Census, William Brough is listed as being 12 years old (born about 1839), born in Stoke, Staffordshire, working as a "Potter", and residing with his parents, George and Harriet Brough, in Stone Road, Blurton, Staffordshire.

On 1 November 2012, James H. Brough of Alsager, England, provided the following information to the BFO: The marriage of "William Brough" and "Elizabeth Wooton" (SRO#428) took place by Banns on 9 November 1863; William Brough was 24 years old (born about 1839), a Bachelor and Potter of Stoke, and his father was George Brough, a Miner; and Elizabeth Wooton was 19 years old (born about 1844), a Spinster of Stoke, and her father was Philip Wooton, a Potter.  The marriage was witnessed by John Hulme and William Moore.

In the 1871 Census, William Brough is listed as being 32 years old (born about 1839), born in Longton, Staffordshire, married and working as a "Beer Seller", and residing with his wife, Elizabeth, and their one son, George (1 year old), at: 154 Normacott Road, Longton, Staffordshire.

The marriage of William Brough and Ann Keeling is listed in the parish register for St. Michael's, Stone, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1278,887, Item #3), which states that they were married on 2 May 1876; that William Brough was 37 years old (born about 1839), a Widower and Potter of Normicott, and that his father was George Brough, a Collier; and that Ann Keeling was 37 years old (born about 1839), a Widow, and that her father was George Barlow, a Potter.  The marriage was witnessed by Robrt Borham and Mary Ann Barlow.

William Brough is listed in the Monumental Inscriptions of St. John's Churchyard of Longton, Staffordshire, England (FHL Book#: 942. A1, No. 158, p. 555), which states: "In memory of Elizabeth Brough wife of William Brough of Wood St. who died Dec 16th 1874 aged 30 years. Also Harriet their daughter who died April 30th 1874 aged 1 year & 5 months. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.  Also William their son who died Feb 15th 1877 aged 5 years and 6 months. Lie still little angle in they grave. My tears shall not awake thee.  I anxiously wait till God appears and then I'll overtake thee."

The burial of "William Brough" is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 1470945, Item #12), which states that he was buried on 26 July 1890 at St. Paul church in Edensor, Staffordshire, England, that he was of "6 Heathcote Court", and that he died when he was "52" years old (born about 1838).


Elizabeth Wootten

The birth of "Elizabeth Wootten" is listed in the online FreeBMD, which states that her birth was registered in April-June 1844 in Stone district, Staffordshire.

A1, No. 158, p. 513), which states: "In memory of George Brough of Stone Road who died Feb. 1st 1875 aged 61 years [born about 1814]. They will be done O' Lord. George Brough grandson of the above born August 4th 1869, died April 26th 1881. Also of Harriet the beloved wife of the above born Jan 2nd 1818, died Jan 4th 1883. They will be done O' Lord".

The 1836 birth and christening of "William Brough" is listed in the "Methodist New Connexion" register of Longton, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 825394, Item #2), which states that he was born on 15 June 1836 and christened on 2 July 1836 as the "1st child [or son]" of James Brough and Susanah Myatt; that James Brough was a Miner of Lane End in the parish of Stoke-upon-Trent; and that Susanah Myatt was the daughter of John Myatt, a Potter of Lane End.

The christening for Eliza Anne Brough is listed in FamilySearch (FHL Film # 7566681), which states that she was christened on 29 October 1837 at St. John's church in Longton, Staffordshire, England, and that her parents were "Jas [James] Brough" and "Susannah".

In the 1861 Census, "Eliza Brough" is listed as being 23 years old (born about 1838), born in Blurton, Staffordshire, unmarried and working as a "Potter" and residing with her parents, James Brough (age 51) and Susannah (age 52), and her young daughter, Jemima (age 3), and her unmarried sister, Elizabeth (age 20), at: Stone Road, Blurton, Staffordshire, England.

The 1864 marriage of "James Edwards" and "Eliza Ann Brough" is listed in the parish register of Blurton, Staffordshire, England (FHL Film # 1040829, Item #11), which states that they were married by Banns on 6 June 1864 in Blurton; that they were both of "full age"; that James Edwards was a "Bachelor" and "Miner" of "Stone Road" and that his father was "Jesse Edwards" a "Potter"; and that Eliza Ann Brough was a "Spinster" and "Potter" of "Stone Road" and that her father was "James Brough" a "Miner".  The marriage was witnessed by George Brough and Joseph Chadwick.hire, England.

In the 1871 Census, "Eliza Edwards" is listed as being 33 years old (born about 1838), born in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, married--although her husband is not listed with her in the census--and working as a "Potter", and residing in the home of her parents, James Brough (age 62) and Susannah (age 63), at: Stone Road, Trentham, Staffordshire, England.


James Edwards

The christening of "James Edwards" is listed in FamilySearch, which states that he was christened on 1 March 1840 at St. James church in Longton, Staffordshire, England, and that his parents were "Jesse Edwards" and "Sarah".

The 1892 marriage of "Richard Birks" and "Lydia (Brough) Bullock" is listed in the parish register of Dresden, Staffordshire (FHL Film # 1470944, Item #7), which states that they were married by Banns on 24 December 1892 in Dresden; that Richard Birds was 37 years old (born about 1855), a Bachelor and Coachman of 29 Russell Street, Dresden, and that his father was Richard Birks, a Cratemaker; and that Lydia Bullock was 36 years old (born about 1856), a Widow and Potter of 72 Dunrobin Street, Florence, and that her father was Jabez Brough, a Potter.  The marriage took place "in [the] church [of Dresden in the] presnce of Jabez Brough and Edith Kinsey".

In the 1901 Census, Lydia (Brough) Birks is listed as being about45 years old (born about 1856), born in Longton, and living with her second husband, Richard Birks, in her mother's (Elizabeth Brough) home in Dresden, Longton, Staffordshire.

According to the marriage document of Richard Birks and Lydia (Brough) Bullock, in 1892, Lydia (Brough) Bullock was 36 years old and her father was Jabez Brough.
