In January 2008 the RBFO obtained a copy of the birth certificate of Samuel Brough, which listed his mother, Harriet Brough, but not his father.

However, the 1851 Census mistakenly records that Samuel was the "son" of Elizabeth Brough--who was actually his grandmother; for the birth certificate of Samuel identifies his mother as Harriet Brough--who was "single" according to the 1851 Census.
