Mary (Maria) Broe

In May 2011, Anne Modistach of New South Wales, Australia, provided the following information to the RBFO in reference to the family of John Broe and Elizabeth: "I have scoured New Zealand papers and articles for the period and Thomas Brough also had a brother Patrick who emigrated to New Zealand in around 1864 from Ireland.  This Patrick has also been found in the Rathfarnham baptism records as being the son of John Broe and his wife Elizabeth.  Patrick's baptism was in 1825 and is on the Irish Genealogy site together with other children Mary (or Maria) in 1821, Martin in 1828, and Eliza in 1830.  Three other children of this family were born in Donnybrook: Henry, 1823, William, c1827, and George, 1834.  Henry and George emigrated to Australia and operated sawmills in and around Deniliquin, New South Wales.  An Irish researcher has documents including a bible given to Eliza by her brother Henry before his emigration. Henry died in New South Wales, and George returned to Dublin where he died a few years later.  She [the Irish researcher] also has a funeral card stating that John senior died in 1858 in Blue Bell [Bluebell, County Kildare, Ireland] which was where one of the sawmills was located."

Eliza married Peter Hickey in Rathfarnham and she is descended from this family. The research on George and Henry Broe in Australia I did myself for this lady from local records and newspaper reports after she told me of the bible given to Eliza Hickey from her brother Henry and she traced his passage to Australia. William is in her family records as he was a grocer and shows up in the Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s as do George and Henry. I also found them on the Griffiths Valuation. Henry originally married in Belfast but his first wife died either on the voyage or shortly afterwards and he married a local woman here in this town [of Deniliquin, New South Wales, Australia]. George never married either in Ireland or Australia. Descendants of Henry and his second wife Bridget still live in Sydney [australia] and surrounding areas.
