In May 2011, Anne Modistach of New South Wales, Australia, provided the RBFO with a copy of the military discharge of Thomas Broe, which stated the following: "65th Regiment of Foot. These are to certify that No. 1900, Thomas Broe, Private, born in the Parish of Round Town, in or near the city of Dublin in the County of Dublin was enlisted at Dublin for the 65th Regiment on the 12th March 1842 at the Age of 17 9/12 Years. That he has served in the Army for Fourteen Years and 250 Days [and] Was in Australia Ten 10/12 Years. That he is discharged to consequence of Receiving a free Discharge and Twelve months Pay agreeably to the Royal Warrant of 10th July 1848 with a view of Settling in the Australian Colonies. Dated: Wellington, New Zealand, 28 February 1857. Character: Good and he wears one good conduct badge with pay."
In March 2011, the RBFO obtained a copy of the death certificate of Thomas Brough from New Zealand, which stated that he died on 18 July 1876 of "First, Gangrene" and "Second, Phetisis" and was buried on 23 July 1876 in Wanganui Cemetery (on North Island, New Zealand). The death certificate also stated that Thomas Brough was born in "Dublin, Ireland"; that his father was "John Brough", a "Coach Proprietor"; that his mother was "Elizabeth Brough formerly Brown"; that he was the father of "seven boys and one girl"; that he had lived in New Zealand for "about 30 years"; and that he was "First [married] at 18 years [old]" in "Dublin, Ireland" (which took place in about 1844) and "second [married] at 47 years [old]" in "New Zealand" to "Mary Tozer" (which took place in 1873--so Thomas Brough was born in about 1826). The "Informant" at the time of Thomas Brough's death was "John Anderson, Undertaker".
In May 2011, Anne Modistach of New South Wales, Australia, informed the RBFO of the following about John Broe and Thomas Brough: "I have a copy of Thomas Broe's certificate of discharge as attached which states that Thomas was born in the Parish of Roundtown in or near the city of Dublin and that he enlisted in the 65th Regiment of Foot on the 12th March 1842 aged 17 yrs 9 mths. That he served in the army 14 years and 260 days and was in the Australian Colonies (which at that time included New Zealand) ten years and ten months. ...Thomas' army records state he was one of around 100 Irish recruits to the regiment in 1842 and was enlisted in the Dublin district. His father is described as a "miller" in some records by other family members and the John Broe of Rathfarnham was a sawmiller who had mills in the Dublin area. Two of his sons followed the same trade."
Research Note: Ancestry.com (Feb.2011), lists his birth as 12 March 1824 in Rathfamham, Dublin, Ireland, and his parents as John Brough Broe and Elizabeth Brown--although no source is listed for this Ireland birthdate or birth place.
In May 2011, Anne Modistach of New South Wales, Australia, informed the RBFO that: "I have had Thomas' army records researched and during 1844 Thomas was attached to part of his regiment in Carrick-on-Shannon and marched to Dublin in January of that year then marched back to Mullingar in June of that year. He was there until October when he was relocated to Castlebar and then Loughrea and then was on leave until January 1845. His first child was born on ship in 1846 after his regiment embarked for Van Diemans Land on May 5, 1846." Subsequently, Anne Modistach stated: "Thomas arrived in New Zealand on 26 January 1847, as the ships muster books show him paid up in Sydney, [New South Wales, Australia] on the 25 January 1847 and from that date onwards paid in New Zealand.
In May 2011, Peter Allen Brough of Perth, Australia, informed the RBFO that: "Thomas Brough came to New Zealand in 1824 with the 65th Regiment to fight in the New Zealand wars. He travelled to Australia on the 'Maitland'--a convict ship--as an army guard with his pregnant wife Sarah Jane [Carroll]. Sarah gave birth to a son on the voyage who they named John Maitland Brough after the ship--as was the custom. They were stationed at Hobart, Tasmania, for several months and then travelled with his regiment aboard the HMS Inflexible to New Zealand. After his discahrge from the army he stayed on in New Zealand and settled."
The birth and christening of "Jane Carroll" is listed in the on-line IrishGenealogy.ie website, which states that she was born and christened (or "baptized") in "1816" in the "Roman Catholic" church of "Rathfarnham, Dublin", Ireland, and that her parents were "John Carroll" and "Cath".
In March 2011, the RBFO obtained a copy of the death certificate of Sarah Brough from New Zealand, which stated that she died on 21 January 1873 at "57 yes" [years] old (born about 1816) of "Haematemesis [and] Excessive loss of blood by the bowels", and that the "Informant" at the time of her death was "Thomas Brough the Husband" of "Duvauchelle Bay" (on South Island, New Zealand).
The burial (and photo of the headstone) of Sarah Brough is listed and shown on Ancestry.com. The headstone reads: "Sarah wife of Thomas Brough who departed this life January 21st 1873 aged 51 years" (born about 1822).
Sarah Jane Carroll is listed in New Family Search (Feb.2011; PI# 9V7G-X3G) with her husband and children.

The marriage was witnessed by James Geoghegan and Maryann Lee. (This marriage information was provided to the RBFO in May 2011 by Anne Modistach, who had located it on the Roots Ireland website. The transcription of the marriage entry was originally produced by the Swords Historical Society of Dublin, Ireland.)
In May 2011, Anne Modistach of New South Wales, Australia, informed the RBFO of the following about Thomas Brough's marriage to Sarah Carroll: "Thomas' marriage record clearly shows that he was at least 20 and that Sarah was 22. Sarah died in January 1873 and Thomas married again that year to Mary Tozer and had two more children: Charles Patrick, born 1876, and Sarah Ann, in 1875."

Geographical Note: From the on-line The Cyclopedia of New Zealand: "German Bay is in the county of Akaroa [Canterbury Provincial District, South Island, New Zealand], and is about seventeen miles from Little River, with which, as with Pigeon Bay, it is connected by a coach service. Akaroa is only a mile or two distant. There are about 220 inhabitasts at German Bay, which has a public school, a dairy factory, a local post office, and a telephone service. Cheesemaking is carried on as an industry, and the district generally is devoted to dairying and the cultivation of grass seed. The country around is hilly, and through there a few large farms, most of the holdings are of medium size. The Germans, about six in number, who came out with the French settlers, formed a settlement in what is now known as German Bay, and thus the place received its name."
