Research Note:  According to the website "http://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?37417", the S. S. Kanbe was sunk by a German torpedo on 9 May 1943, resulting in the death of 66 crew members.

"Kanbe SS was a British Passenger/Cargo Steamer of 6,244 tons built in 1941 by William Denny & Brothers Ltd., Dumbarton, Yard No 1357 for the British & Burmese Steam Navigation Company, Glasgow. She was powered by a steam, triple expansion engine of 320 nhp, giving 11 knots. On the 9th May 1943 she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine U-123 whilst as a straggler in Convoy TS-38 carr ying a general cargo including 3,500 tons of copper on route from Alexandria - Takoradi - Freetown for the UK Her master, Capt J Burke and 65 of the crew were killed."

"SS Kanbe was built in 1941 and was pressed into service as a convoy ship protecting cargo for the British war effort. She was known as a straggler; a ship that wasn’t very powerful and wasn’t well armed, at the back of the convoy. She was a sitting duck.  In 1943, en route from Alexandria to the UK, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-123, commanded by 24 year old Horst von Schroeter. There were 66 crew on the SS Kanbe; only a few survived. John O’Donnell, a 24 year old from Birchip in northern Victoria, died that night. Von Schroeter survived the war and later become a Commander of NATO Navel forces."
