In August 2011, John M. Brough investigated and documented the following historical information about John Henry Brough, as obtained from Millennial Star publications: John Henry Brough served an LDS Mission to the British Isles during 1896 and 1898. He arrived in Liverpool, England, on 5 March 1896. He was then assigned to the Bradford District, Leeds Conference area, where he apparently spent most or all of his mission until he was released on 5 May 1898. Upon his release he (along with two other missionaries) apparently visited areas of England and/or "the Continent" before returning home. Interestingly, Anna Dawes was baptized into the LDS Church on 18 June 1898, and then married John Henry Brough on 7 July 1898. Therefore, it is possible that John Henry Brough visited Anna's family, helped convert and/or baptize her, and then as a couple they left England for Utah.

Anna Dawes

RBFO researchers obtained the birthdate of this individual from Jerald & Gayle Fawcett of Bountiful, Utah. The birthplace of this individual was obtained from census reports. In addition, the on-line FreeBMD was reviewed for correctness of name, birthdate (by quarter) and general birthplace.

In the 1861 Census, Anna Dawes is listed as being about 5 years old (born about 1856), born in Littleham, Devonshire, and living with her parents, John and Caroline Dawes, and four siblings (Thomas Dawes, Mary Elizabeth Dawes, Caroline A. Dawes, and Samuel John Dawes), in St. Giles, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England.

In the 1871 Census, Anna Dawes is listed as being about 15 years old (born about 1856), born in Bideford, Devonshire, and a "Scholar" (or in school) who was residing as a "Boarder" at St. John, Hampstead, London, England.

In the 1881 Census, Anna Dawes is listed as being about 26 years old (born about 1855), born in Bideford, Devonshire, and a "Visitor" and "Sister" who was residing with her brother, Thomas Dawes, and his wife, Elizabeth, at Vandyke House Laronys Square, Scarborough, Yorkshire.

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Anna (Dawes) Brough is listed as being born in February 1862 in England, immigrated to the United States in 1898, married for two year (married in about 1898) and residing with her husband, John Henry Brough, a Farmer, in Nephi, Utah.

Brough Mullikin; LDS proxy baptism: 11 November 1961, Proxy: Cecily J. Bishop; LDS proxy endowment: 6 January 1962, Proxy: Vera L. Randell.

Thomas Brough

The IGI and LDS Ordinance Index (via the LDS Extraction Program) contains a listing for Thomas Brough, christened 11 Nov 1725, in Spilsby, Lincolnshire. This extraction record was obtained from the Bishop's Transcript for Spilsby (FHL Film # 504765).

January-May 2007 Research Note: Earlier research suggested that Thomas Brough (Broof) who married Elizabeth Seamon in 1773 was the same Thomas Brough who was christened on 22 January 1750 in Coningsby, Lincolnshire. However, further research revealed that this was not the case, as the Thomas Brough who was christened on 22 January 1750 died a couple of years later and was buried on 29 Oct 1752 in Coningsby. (See FHL Film # 1541959.) Also, another Thomas Brough (Bruff), christened on 13 January 1763 in Coningsby, would have been too young to be married in 1773. In addition, it was suggested earlier (in 1998) that Thomas Brough (Broof) who married Elizabeth Seamon in 1773 could have been the Thomas Brough who was christened on 27 April 1733 in Sibsey, Lincolnshire. However, this Thomas Brough died at about age "34" (as listed in the British National Burial Index) and was buried in Boston, Lincolnshire on 18 February 1767. Currently, RBFO researchers believe that the Thomas Brough who married Elizabeth Seamon was the same Thomas Brough who was christened on 11 November 1725 in Spilsby, Lincolnshire.

Geographical Note: The traveling distance between Spilsby, Lincolnshire--where Thomas Brough was christened in 1725, and Mareham Le Fen--where Thomas Brough was married in 1773, is less than 10 miles (9.12 miles).

Research Note: According to Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist in Utah in 1998: "We searched the parish registers of Mareham Le Fen and found her [Elizabeth Simons, burial] - 'Elizabeth Bruff aged 65 (buried) March 8th 1799.' Using age 65 from the 1799 burial year we have a calculated birth year of 1734. A search of the nearby parishes reveal the only possible christening for Elizabeth in the parish of West Ashby. 'Elizabeth daughter of Wm Simons & Elizabeth his wife March 7th 1736'."

Research Note: According to Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist in Utah in 1998: "The name Simons has been found to be spelled Simons, Symons, Seamon and Seaman. In the parish of West Ashby from 1722-1735 there are two Simons having children "

Reseach Note: According to Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist in Utah in 1998: "William [Trout] and Elizabeth [Simons] had children born and christened in Mareham Le Fen from 1757 to 1764. The last child Rebecca was christened on 4 March 1764. Ten days later her father William is buried, on 14 March 1764. Elizabeth now has four very young children to raise. A very difficult position for a young mother to be in at this time in England. She probably had no skills, no trade and probably can not depend on family to help. Often a woman's only course is to quickly marry again whereby a man can provide security and welfare to her own children."

On the 17th of December 1772, 'Mary a daughter of Eliz. Trout' is buried. A few months later she is married to Thomas [Brough] in May 1773." Harriet Brough

The newspaper obituary of Harriet Brough Snarr (that appeared in the Deseret News of 12 October 1901), states that "She was born in England, June 5, 1820". However, this obituary also states--incorrectly--that she came in a "handcart company that crossed the plains and reached Salt Lake [on] September 11, 1854", when it is known that Harriet and her husband, James Thomas Snarr, and their three children, traveled from Missouri to Utah in a wagon train, and that her firth child, James Henry Snarr, was born in Green River, Wyoming, on 11 September 1854.

The christening of "Harriet Brough" is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film # 507835--which is the Bishop's Transcript for Horncastle), and in the parish register of St. Mary, Horncastle, Lincolnshire (FHL Film # 1542140, Item #5, p.93--which states that she was christened on 16 November 1820 at St. Mary, Horncastle, Lincolnshire, and that her parents were "John and Jane Brough" of Horncastle, and that John Brough was a "Laborer".

According to the endowment record, Harriet stated that her parents were "John and Julia Brough", that she was born on "16 November 1823" in "Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England", and that she was baptized into the LDS Church in "November 1852". Note: The LDS "Sealing to Spouse" marriage ordinance of "James Thomas Snarr" and "Harriet Brough" took place in the LDS Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 1 April 1856. This "Endowment House Sealing" record (FHL Special Collections Film # 183394, p.83) lists James Thomas Snarr as being born on 7 November 1818 in Hull, Yorkshire, England; and Harriet Brough as being born on 16 November 1820 in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England. This marriage sealing took place on 1 April 1856 in the Endowment House and was performed by H.C. Kimball, and the witnesses to the sealing were James Cummings and Jno. Lyon.

The 1841 British Census lists Harriet Brough as being about 20 years old (born about 1821), born in Lincolnshire, and apparently residing as a single woman in Holbeach, Lincolnshire.

The 1851 British Census lists Harriet (Snarr) as being about 30 years old (born about 1821), born in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, married and residing with her husband, James T. Also residing with James and Harriet Snarr are two of Harriet's unmarried siblings: John Brough and Caroline Brough.

In 1854, Harriet Brough Snarr is listed as a 33 year old passenger on the sailing ship Windermere that left Liverpool, England on 22 February 1854 and arrived in New Orleans on 23 April 1854. Harriet Brough Snarr was accompanied by her husband, James Thomas Snarr (age 35), and children: Mary Ann Snarr (age 8), Thomas Sonley Snarr (age 4), and Barton Snarr (age 2). In addition, Harriet Brough Snarr's brother, John Brough, and his wife, Mary Winter Fanthorp, and their son Thomas Brough (age 1), were also on the same ship. See this website for further information: http://lib.byu.edu/mormonmigration/person.php?id=3746. It is not known which Mormon pioneer company the Snarr and Brough families traveled in when they crossed the American Plains during the Summer and Fall of 1854. But it was probably either the Darwin Richardson Company or Daniel Garn Company. The Darwin Richardson Company departed Westport, Kansas City, Missouri on 17 June 1854, arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 30 September 1854, and consisted of "about 300 individuals and 40 wagons...when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Westport". The Daniel Garn Company departed Westport, Kansas City, Missouri on 1-2 July 1854, arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, on 1 October 1854, and consisted of "477 individuals and about 40 wagons...when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Westport". Interestingly, Harriet Brough Snarr gave birth to her fifth child, James Henry Snarr, on 11 September 1854 at Green River, Wyoming, and the Deseret News (of 28 September 1854) reported that "Elder Daniel Garn and company (was) seven miles this side (or west) of Fort Bridger (Wyoming) on the 22nd (of September 1854)".

The 1860 U.S. Census lists Harriet (Snarr) as being 37 years old (born about 1823), born in England, and residing with her husband, James T. Snarr, and seven of their children (Thomas, Mary Ann, Barton, James, Joseph, Harriet, and Daniel) in the 5th Ward area of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The 1870 U.S. Census lists Harriet (Snarr) as being 47 years old (born about 1823), born in England, and "Keeping house" while residing with her husband, James T. Snarr, and seven of their children (Thomas S., Barton, James H., Joseph H., Harriet E., Daniel H., and Josephine) in the 6th Ward area of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The 1880 U.S. Census lists Harriet (Snarr) as being being 56 years old (born about 1824), born in England, and "Keeping house" while residing with her husband, James T. Snarr, and three of their children (Joseph H., Daniel H., and Josephine) in the 6th Ward area of Salt Lake City, Utah.

According to the 1900 Census for Utah, Harriet (Brough) Snarr left England and arrived in the United States in 1852. However, Raymond Madsen, a professional genealogist living in Utah, stated the following in 2003: "James Snarr, husband of Harriet was a baker [and he, his wife and their children] departed out of Liverpool 22 February 1854 and arrived at New Orleans 23 April 1854, being on the ocean for three months."
