According to family information, during his life Joseph Brough "couldn't sleep" very well and was "under stress" when he "tried to kill himself three times", and was "told to go into the country and not bother about anything".


Annie Clark Lofthouse

Annie Clark Lofthouse reportedly had a heart attack when she was young but lived into her 80's.

Daniel Brough had an illegitimate son, John Skelton, who married Susanna Turnbull, sister of Jane Turnbull. Their descendants live in Kendal Cumberland. He was best man at John Brough's wedding.

David Brough

1881 c David Brough was with his brother, Daniel, Mason's apprentice.

1891c 177 Stanton St, Elswick, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Stone Mason. With Daughters Jessie J.10, Mabel E. 9, Barbara I. 6 and Elizabeth 4.

Walter was a time-served mason who went on to become the biggest civil engineering contractor of his day, tho' few have heard of him. He was made a Baronet. He married John Brough's cousin Annie, but she died before Walter received his Baronetage. They had 8 children.

Received 100 pounds from Sir Walter Scott's Will.
