Johannis Brough

The burial of Johannis Brough is listed in the parish register of St. Michael's, Macclesfield, Cheshire (FHL Film # 2105906, Item #3, p.156), which states that on 28 December 1728, "Johannes Brough de Mac. Forrest" was buried.

The Cheshire Index of Wills and Inventories (FHL Book # 942.7, B41c, p.40) lists the probated Administration and Inventory of John Brough, dated 15 April 1729. This document (FHL Film # 2127385, pages 319-324) stated that John was a "Yeoman" of "Wildboarclough (Wildboar Clough)" and that his wife was "Maria" or "Mary" of "Wildboarclough (Wildboar Clough)". Unfortunately, this document only mentioned that "Mary Brough" was John's "widow" and did not identify any of John's children or specify his genealogical relationship to any other individual.


Margaretta Brough

The burial of Margaretta Brough is listed in the parish register of St. Michael's, Macclesfield, Cheshire (FHL Film # 2105906, Item #3, p.141), which states that on 29 June 1727, "Margaretta fia Johan Brough de Forrest" was buried.


Robert Brough

The christening of Robert Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film's # 872641, 1040765 and 1040766), which states that he was christened on 9 January 1679 in Leek, Staffordshire, and that his parents were Edmund Brough and Mary.

The burial of Robert Brough is listed in the parish register of Bosley, Cheshire (FHL Film # 1941869, Item #14), which states that he was buried on 26 June 1731 as "Robertus Brough de Winkhill Seputlus frist arasimo Sexto Dio Junn Anna prodicto".

The burial of Robert Brough is listed in the Bishop's Transcript of Bosley, Cheshire (FHL Film # 1655397, Item #3), which states that he was buried on 26 June 1731 as "Robertus Brough de Winknal Sepultus vicesimo Sects de Junn".

The "Will Admon" [Will Administration] of "Robert Brough" of "Wincle" is listed in the on-line "Cheshire Probate Records" as being dated in 1731, and states that he was a "Yeoman".

Robert Brough was murdered "between White Lee Farm and Hollinhall, in Heaton, near Meerbrook", in June 1731 by John Nadin, a disloyal servant. For further information about this murder, see:

In April 2011, the following information was supplied to the RBFO from a family member living in England: "The Gentleman's Magazine gives an account of this murder and calls Robert Brough 'A substantial Cheshire farmer'. It also says at the end of the account that Mary was to be brought to trail and that John Naden (whom she led astray) was hung in chains on Gunn opposite the farmhouse and left there 'until his flesh falls from his bones' for Mary to see what she had brought to her husband and lover. It is also recorded locally that Mary lived and died alone in a little cottage on the edge of the Moors."


Mary Daken

The burial of Mary Brough is listed in the Bishop's Transcript of Bosley, Cheshire (FHL Film # 1655397), which states that she was buried on 21 September 1735 as "Mary Brough widow of Sutton, buried the twenty first day of September anno 1735".

The burial of Mary Brough is listed in the parish register of Bosley, Cheshire (FHL Film # 1941869), which states that she was buried on 21 September 1735 as "Maria Brough widow Vidua de Sutton, Sepulta vicesima primo die Septembur anna Domin 1735 who was wife to Robert Brough of Wincle who was murdered by John Nadin and buried here June 26, 1731".

Research Note: The IGI (via the LDS EXtraction Program) lists a Mary Dakin who was christened on 26 July 1699 as the daughter of John and Mary Dakin in Cauldon, Staffordshire. The traveling distance between Cauldon, Staffordshire, and Prestbury, Cheshire, is 25 miles.


Mary Brough

The christening of Mary Brough is listed in the parish register of Prestbury (FHL Film # 2093600, Item #3), which states that she was christened on 28 July 1719 as the daughter of Robert Brough of Wincle.

In April 2011, Ann Brough Hind of England informed the RBFO that "Robert Brough and Mary Daken had three daughters: Mary, Alice and Elizabeth, and a son, Robert, who were named in Robert's will."

Brough and Annie.


Edmund Brough

The christening of Edmund Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film's # 872641, 1040765 and 1040766), which states that he was christened on 18 March 1677 in Leek, Staffordshire, and that his parents were Edmund Brough and Mary.


Robert Brough

Robert Brough was probably born about 1612 in Bosley, Cheshire. Unfortunately, the parish records of Bosley start in 1617 (see the Bishop's Transcript, FHL Film # 1655397, Item #3). However, it is interesting to note that Robert Brough's grandson, who was also named Robert Brough (b.1679), was murdered in 1731 at White Lee Farm, Wincle, Staffordshire, but his body was subsequently brought back to be buried alongside his Brough relatives in Bosley, Cheshire.

Robert Brough is listed in the parish register of Leek, Staffordshire (FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, Volume 13) as "Rob. Brough of Brancott" in the christening of his first child, Joan Brough in 1636; as "Rob. Brough" in the christening of his second child, Anna Brough in 1639; and as "Robt. Brough" in the christening of his third child, Edmund Brough in 1643.

The burial of Robert Brough is listed in the parish register of Leek , Staffordshire (FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, Volume 13, page 122), which states that he was buried on 28 February 1657 as "Robert Brough, of Branckot [or Broncott], in p. [parish of] Leeke".

Geographical Note: Broncott is within the parish of Alstonfield, as described on-line via Genuki as follows: "Alstonfield, or Alstonefield, is a village of well built houses, picturesquely seated on a western declivity above Dovedale, ten miles E of Leek.... and the [parish includes the] scattered districts of Broncott, Morredge Top...and some others, on the banks of the Manifold." The traveling distance between Alstonefield and Leek is about 13 miles.


Anne Wilson

Anne Wilson (Brough) is listed in the parish register of Leek, Staffordshire (FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, Volume 13) as "Anne" (Brough) in the christening of her first child, Joan Brough in 1636; as "Anne Wilson of Brownsford" in the christening of her second child, Anna Brough in 1639; and as "Annie Brough of Brownsword" in the christening of her third child, Edmund Brough in 1643.

The burial of Anne Wilson is listed in the parish register of Leek, Staffordshire (FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, Volume 13, page 181), which states that she was buried on 31 March 1669 as "Widow Brough, of Broncot".


Joan Brough

The christening of Joan Brough is listed in the parish register of Leek (FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, Volume 13, page 12), which states that she was christened on 18 May 1636 as the daughter of "Rob. and Anne Brough of Brancott". Also, the christening of Joan Brough Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film's # 872641, 1040765 and 1040766), which states that she was christened on 18 May 1636 in Leek, Staffordshire, and that her parents were Rob. Brough and Anne.


Anna Brough

The christening of Anna Brough is listed in the parish register of Leek (FHL Book # 942.46, B4pr, Volume 13, page 31), which states that she was christened on 12 October 1639 as the daughter of "Anne Wilson of Brownsford and Rob. Brough". Also, the christening of Anna Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, FHL Film's # 872641, 1040765 and 1040766), which states that she was christened on 12 October 1639 in Leek, Staffordshire, and that her parents were Rob. Brough and Anne Wilson.

The christening and burial of Ann Brough is listed in the IGI (via LDS Patron Submission), which states that she was christened on 12 October 1639 in Leek, Staffordshire, as the daughter of Robert Brough and Ann Wilson, and that she was buried on 18 January 1640.

Edmund (or Edmundi) Brough is mentioned as follows: The christening of Joanna Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, via FHL Film # 1655397, Item #3 --containing the Bishop's Transcript of Bosley), which states that she was christened on 28 December 1620 in Bosley, Cheshire, and that her father was Edmundi Brough.

Research Note: It is interesting to note that Robert Brough (b.abt. 1612) probably named his first son Edmund Brough (chr.1643) after his father, Edmund (or Edmundi) Brough (b.abt.1586).

In the 1700's and 1800's, French polishing was a wood finishing technique that resulted in a very high gloss surface, with a deep colour and chatoyancy. In the Victorian era, French polishing was commonly used on Mahogany and other expensive woods, and was considered the best possible finish for fine furniture and string instruments such as pianos, lutes and guitars. However, the process was very labour intensive.
