Research Note: The IGI and LDS Ordinance Index (via the LDS Extraction Program) lists a William Brough, christened on 22 April 1687, in Yoxall, Staffordshire, England--which is about nine miles southwest of Tutbury, Staffordshire. Further research needs to be conducted into the possibility that one of these William Brough's may be the same William Brough who was the father of a William Brough who was christened in 1727 in Tutbury. In addition, the Brough Wills and Probates of the Warwickshire and Staffordshire areas are being examined to see if they offer any insight into the lineage of the Broughs of Birmingham, Warwickshire. (Caution: Previous research has shown that the following William Brough's are NOT the father of William Brough who was christened in 1727 in Tutbury: William Brough of Trentham who was christened on 10 March 1696 [see RBFO Rin # 6849]; William Brough of Trentham who was christened on 5 Apr 1696 in Trentham [see RBFO Rin # 6728]; and William Brough of Trentham who was christened on 19 Nov 1699 in Trentham [see RBFO Rin # 6807].)

William Brough (Bruff)

Research Note: The first "Brough" or "Bruff" entries in the parish records of St. Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire (which span the years 1555 to 1875), appeared in 1744 (see FHL Microfiche #6900588). Therefore, it is probable that William Brough (Bruff) came from another location other than Birmingham. A patronymical and radius-distance search of the IGI and LDS Ordinance Index (via the LDS Extraction Program) shows that there was a William Brough, the son of a William Brough, christened at Tutbury, Staffordshire, England, on 28 May 1727. Tutbury is located about 39 miles northeast of Birmingham, and previous research has shown that a number of Brough families moved from the agricultual areas of northern and central Staffordshire southward into larger cities--such as Birmingham--during the 1700's and 1800's. At the current time (November 2006), research is continuing into the ancestry of William Brough (m. 1757)--including the possibility that the William Brough who married Elizabeth Leak in Edgbaston, Warwickshire in 1757 may be the same William Brough who was christened in Tutbury, Staffordshire in 1727. In addition, the Brough Wills and Probates of the Warwickshire and Staffordshire areas are being examined to see if they offer any insight into the lineage of the Broughs of Birmingham, Warwickshire.
