In December 2006, the RBFO obtained the birth certificate for Henry Brough. The birth certificate stated that Henry's father, George Brough, was a "farm laborer", and that his mother's given name was "Ellen" and her surname was "Cartwright"--which is interesting since she was also known as Ellen "Pigott." Regading this matter, Mark E. Gardner, a professional genealogist, wrote the following in December 2006: "Concerning the family of Geoge Brough and Ellen Pigott or Cartwright: The birth certificates for two of the children of George Brough and Ellen show Ellen's maiden name to be Cartwright. Our searches for a marriage of a George Brough to Ellen produced only the marriage of George Broughand Ellen Pigott. We obtained this marriage certificate which was at High Offley on 9 March 1874--which is about two years prior to the first child of George Brough and Ellen Cartwright's child named George Henry Brough being born. This marriage certificate of George Brough and Ellen Pigott does not list father's names. Often when a certificate does not list a father's name it could mean that one or both parties who are married were born out of wedlock. As a result, the father may or may not have been known. Usually when a child is born out wedlock the child carries the mothers maiden name as his or hers surname. In this case, if Ellen Pigott/Cartwright was born out of wedlock then Pigott might very well be her biological fathers surname and her mother's maiden name is Cartwright. A birth or christening should be sought to try and identify her real parents and they may very well be a Mr. Pigott and Miss. Cartwright."
According to the Vital Records Index for the British Isles, the christening of Henry Brough took place on 18 February 1885 in Gnosall, Staffordshire, England.According to their marriage certificate (obtained by the RBFO in 2006), Henry Brough, then listed as Harry Brough on his marriage certificate, was 37 years of age and a "Platelayer" at the time of his marrage (in 1922) to Frances Annie Jones. Frances was listed as being 34 years of age and a "Spinster" at the time of her marriage to Harry.
Christening record found in Drayton Parish Register, FHL Film # 1526925.
The Gnosall Parish Record states that when George Brough was christened on 16 Sep 1849 that his family's abode was in "Knightley", Gnosall, Staffordshire, England.
The family of George and Ellen Brough is listed in the 1881 and 1891 Census.
Christening information obtained from the Vital Records Index for the British Isles.
In December 2006, the RBFO obtained the birth certificates for John and Henry Brough, two of the children of George Brough and Ellen Pigott. The birth certificate stated that John's father, George Brough, was a "farm laborer", and that his mother's given name was "Ellen" and her surname was "Cartwright"--which is interesting since she was also known as Ellen "Pigott." In January 2007, the RBFO obtained the birth certificate for Ellen Pigott, which stated she was born on 14 Sep 1853 in Hill Farm, Castle Church [in Stafford], Staffordshire. However, no father is listed on Ellen's birth certificate and her mother, listed as "Eliza Pigott" was living in the "Workhouse" in Stafford.
The family of George Brough and Ellen Pigott is listed in the 1881 and 1891 Census. The 1881 Census lists Ellen as being about 29 years of age and born in Audmore, Staffordshire, and the 1891 Census lists Ellen as being about 39 years old and born in Gnosall, Staffordshire. (Note: Gnosall is only about six travel miles from Stafford--where Ellen Pigott's birth certificate states she was born.)
The christening of Ellen Pigott is listed in the IGI and LDS Ordinance Index (via the LDS Extraction Program).
George Brough is listed as the first child and a "6" year old son of George and Ellen Brough in the 1881 Census.
Christening information obtained from the Vital Records Index for the British Isles.
John Brough is listed as a "14" year old son son of George and Ellen Brough in the 1891 Census, and as a "4" year old son in the 1881 Census.
