John Allan Russell Brown was an expert genealogist and during the 1980' and 1990's assisted Catharine Ann Brough Hind in carrying out extensive genealogical and historical research on the Broughs of northern Staffordshire. . He died in 1993.
This family had six children and lived for a time in Handsworth, Birmingham, England.
The christening of Mary Ellen Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program), and states in the Bishop's Transcript record (FHL Film # 435787, Item #1) that Mary Ellen Brough was christened on 5 August 1849 in Leek, as the daughter of Henry and Mary Brough of Buxton Road, Leek, and that Henry was a Warehouseman.

In September 2008, James H. Brough (of Alsager, England) provided the RBFO with the following information on the christening of James Henry Brough as follows: "Stoke St. Peter, No.776, 10 June 1816: James son of James and Ellen Brough [of] Stoke [and a] Joiner."

Henry Brough (b.1817) was a Silkwarehouseman with J & J Brough (later merged to make Messrs. Brough, Nicholson & Hall - 1837 joined Mechanics' Institute Workers' - Educational Establishment supported by employers John and Joshua Brough described as being Henry's "Cousins" - m. 5.8.1841 Mary Abbott (Cardboard Box Manufacturer) in St. Peters, Stoke. Lived in cottage in Buxton Road - 1849 - Appointed Secretary to Mechanics Institute - 1851 Census - Living at 79 Buxton Road with widowed mother, two sons and two daughters - occupation Warehouseman - 1853 - accused in pamphlet published by Librarian of Mechanics Institute of being "authoritarian" - 1861 - started button-making business from premises in Russell Street - buttons made by farmers' wives at home - Buttons made of wood, bone or horn - business failed with mass-production of buttons - Assumed business of wife's family - cardboard box manufacturing - moved premises to Old Temperace Hall and then to premises in Stockwell Street with an annex in Haywood Street. On death of son Edward, realised assets to pay his debts became tee-total and stalwart Congregational Church - D. 22.1.1898.
