The birth, christening, death and burial of Richard Brough was extensively documented by Marie B. Nielson and R. Clayton Brough, RBFO Genealogists, in the 1980's and 1990's.
The christening of Richard Brough is listed in the IGI (via the LDS Extraction Program, Trentham parish register--FHL Film # 873647, p.291). Also, the christening date of Richard Brough is listed in the parish register of Trentham (FHL Film # 1526191, Item #17), which states that his father--also named Richard Brough--was a Labourer.

Richard Brough, Head, Married, Male, age 85, Occupation: Brickmaker, Born: Trentham, Staffordshire
Mary (Brough), Wife, Married, Female, age 74, Born: Stoke Upon Trent, StaffordshireRichard Brough was "86 years old" when he was buried in "the Parish of Dresden" on "February 4, 1873" (FHL Film # 1470944, page 23).
Richard Brough was baptized into the LDS Church on June 20, 1840 at Frooms Hill, England, by Thomas Clark. He was later ordained a Teacher in the Aaronic Priesthood of the LDS Church on September 28, 1840, at Hanley, Staffordshire, England, by Wilford Woodruff and George Simpson. This information appears in the "Minutes of the Conference of the Staffordshire Potteries, September 28, 1840",and is taken from "Wilford Woodruff's Journal", printed in 1983 by Signature Books, Volume 1 (1833-1840), pages 393 and 522. The book is available in the LDS Church Historical Department in Salt Lake City, Utah.
On 1 April 1856 and again on 1 February 1857, Richard Brough blessed two children in the LDS Longton Branch of Staffordshire, England. FHL Film # 0087016, p.507.
2004 Research Note: There is an "Alice Brough" listed on the IGI who was supposedly born in "about 1843" in "Longton, Lane End, St. John, Staffordshire, England" to Richard Brough and Mary Horleston. However, RBFO researchers have determined that this is not correct. For example, this "Alice Brough" is not listed in the 1851 Census, RBFO researchers have not been able to find an Alice Brough listed in any Longton church/parish records. Also, Samuel R. Brough's "Temple Records" do not include her name and she does not appear on any TIB records (in the Special Collections area of the Family History Library). Apparently, Alice Brough was mistakenly listed as "Sealed to Parents" on 5 January 1922 in an earlier RBFO book (published in 1981), and this encouraged someone to later submit her name (in 1990) for LDS Ordinance work to the LDS Temple in Los Angeles, California, which now appears on the IGI.
2006 Research Note: In February 2006, Mark E. Gardner, a professional genealogist and reference consultant at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, discovered that Mary Horleston (or Hollistone or Horleston) apparently had "two" sons prior to her marriage to Richard Brough. (Richard Brough served as a Gunner in the British Royal Artillery Service between 1805 and 1822 and spent most of his time in and around southern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea. He was honorably discharged from the military on 1 January 1823.) Mary's first "illegitimate" son was James Hollison, who was christened in Bucknall, Staffordshire, on June 30, 1816 (FHL Film # 426501, p.15, Bishop's Transcript; FHL Film # 1278889, Parish Transcript). Mary's second "illegitimate" son (described as "spurious" in the Bishop's Transcript) was John Hollison, who was christened in Stoke Upon Trent, Staffordshire, on April 13, 1821 (FHL Film # 435854, p.211.) According to the 1841 British Census, James had left the household of Richard Brough and Mary Hollison by 1841, while John, then about 22 years old (in 1841), was still living with Richard Brough and Mary Hollison and their children in Longton, Staffordshire, England. However, John does not appear with the family in the 1851 British Census.
Mary Hollison, Hollistone, Horleston
Mary Horleston was 80 years old (born about 1799) when she was buried at St. John's, Longton, Staffordshire on 20 April 1879 (See: FHL Film # 1471147, entry #1107, page 112). Unfortunately, by the time Memorial Inscriptions of St. John's Churchyard were recorded (in the mid-1900's, see: FHL Booklet: British, Q Area, 942, A1, No.158), Mary Horleston Brough's grave was not visible or recorded.
Research Note: Unfortunately, extensive research in the late 1900's by Marie B. Nielson, an RBFO Genealogist, did not uncover the precise date or place of the birth or christening of Mary Horleston (Hollison or Hollistone).
The christening for John Hollison on 13 April 1821 can be found in Bishop's Transcript for Stoke Upon Trent (FHL Film #435854, p.211).
In the 1841 Census, "John Hollison" is listed as being about 22 years old (born about 1819), born in Staffordshire, working as a Potter, and residing with Richard and Mary Brough and their children in Longton, Staffordshire, England
2007 Research Note: In August 2007, the RBFO obtained the marriage certificate for a "John Aaron Holeston" and the death certificate for the same "John Aaron Holison". These certificates contained information that convinced RBFO researchers that the John Aaron Holeston/Holison mentioned in the certificates was NOT the same individual as the John Hollison who was the son of Mary Hollison or who resided with Richard Brough and Mary Hollison in the 1841 Census.
Birth Information: Ellen Brough's birth is listed in the LDS Salt Lake Temple Ordinance Records (FHL Film # 184086, 2nd Floor U.S. Section), which was submitted by her younger sister, Elizabeth Brough Tipton, who performed the following LDS ordinances for Ellen: LDS Baptism on 13 November 1894, and LDS Endowment on 16 November 1894.
Christening Information: The christening of Ellen Brough on 9 Jan 1825 at St. John's, Lane End, Longton, Staffordshire, is listed in the Parish Register for St. John's, Longton (FHL Film # 1471086).
Death Information: Elizabeth Brough Tipton--a younger sister of Ellen Brough---performed an LDS Sealing of Ellen Brough to her parents, Richard Brough and Mary Horleston, on 28 February 1895 in the Salt Lake Temple, during which Elizabeth indicated that Ellen Brough had died "about 1885" (see FHL Film # 184652, in Special Collections).
Census Information: The 1841 Census lists Ellen Brough as being about 16 years old (b.abt.1825). Ellen is not listed as a single woman or with her parents in the 1851, 1861, 1871 or 1881 Census reports--which suggests that if she hadn't died before the 1851 Census was taken that she might have been living somewhere else or had gotten married--and thereby listed under her husband's surname--prior to the 1851 Census.
May 2007 Research Note: RBFO researchers could not locate Ellen Brough's death (under the surname of "Brough) in the on-line FreeBMD or on-line Staffordshire-BMD. Therefore, they began investigating the possibility that she had been married between 1840 1875. On-line sources listed several marriages of "Ellen" Brough's in Staffordshire (and border areas). They proved as follows:
1841: Ellen Brough to George Flanagan at Hurdsfield, Prestbury, Cheshire. Ellen's father was listed as Samuel Brough.
1844: Ellen Brough to Francis Corry at St. Michael, Stone, Staffordshire. Ellen's father was listed as William Brough.
1851: Ellen Brough to Charles Sanders at St. Gregory's Chapel in Longton. Ellen's father was listed as William Brough.
1857: Ellen Brough to William Gregory at St. Margaret, Wolstanton. Ellen's father was listed as William Brough.
1864: Ellen Brough to John Broadhurst at Holy Trinity, Mossley, Cheshire East. The RBFO did not obtain the marriage certificate of this Ellen Brough, because according to the 1871 Census, the Ellen Brough who married John Broadhurst was only 30 years old (or born about 1841) and was therefore not the Ellen Brough born to Richard Brough and Mary Horleston in 1825.
1871: Ellen Brough to William Sherratt at St. Lawrence, Biddulph, Staffordshire. Ellen's father was listed as Ralph Brough.
1872: Ellen Brough to John Hudson at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Stoke upon Trent. Ellen's father was listed as John Brough.June 2007 Research Note: RBFO researchers obtained the death certificate for an Ellen Brough, who died on 4 January 1877 in the Workhouse on Mill Road, West Derby, Lancaster, England. At the time of her death, this Ellen Brough was listed as being "51 years" old and the "Wife of William Brough, Laborer."
July 2007 Research Note: RBFO researchers are currently investigating the possibility that an Ellen Brough married a Josiah Yardley (listed in the 1851 Census) and had a daughter named Elizabeth Yardley who was possibly born in the quarter of March 1842.
The christening for Jane Brough--of 10 September 1826 in High Street Chapel or Lower Chapel Wesleyan, Longton, Staffordshire--is listed in the IGI and LDS Ordinance Index (via the LDS Extraction Program) as found in the following source: Caroline Street Chapel, Independent, Lane-End and Longton, Staffordshire (Births and Baptisms: 1819-1837), FHL Film # 825393.
Research Note: Jane Brough is not listed in the 1841 Census with her parents and brothers and sisters, which suggests that she might have died or was living somewhere else prior to the 1841 Census.
The christening for William Brough is listed in the IGI and LDS Ordinance Index (via the LDS Extraction Program) and can be found in FHL Film # 435798.
In July 2007, the RBFO obtained a copy of the death certificate of William Brough from England. It stated that on 28 June 1848, William Brough, age "19 years" and a "Potter" residing at "Chapel Street, Lane End", died of "Phthisis" (or tuberculosis of the lungs).
William Brough was buried on July 4, 1848 at Lane End, St. John, Longton, Staffordshire, England. His burial entry in the Chapelry of Lane End states that William was of "Lane End" and "19" years of age at the time of his burial. FHL Film #1471087, p.86.
The birthdate of George Brough was obtained from an LDS Temple Index Bureau (TIB) Record (Film # 1267255 [Entry #42608, Book 2F, Page 1400]). This TIB record, which was authored by Samuel R. Brough, states that George Brough was born on "25 June 1838" in "Blurton, Staffordshire", and that he died in "February 1903". Samuel R. Brough then did LDS temple work (as proxy) for George Brough as follows: LDS Baptism on 19 March 1918, LDS Endowment on 29 March 1918.
Research Note: There have been questions raised about whether or not George Brough existed and/or if he was a child of Richard Brough and Mary Horleston. Samuel R. Brough's "Temple Records" book (p.7 and 17) states that George Brough was born on 15 June 1838 in Blurton, Staffordshire, England. However, in August 1999, May 2003, and May 2007, Marie B. Nielson, R. Clayton Brough, and Ethel M. Brough (of the RBFO Research Committee), could not locate any such birth, christening or burial date/record for a George Brough in Blurton, Lane End, Longton or nearby areas. Also, George Brough is not listed with the other children of Richard Brough and Mary Horleston in the 1841 Census (or later census reports). Therefore, as of May 2007, RBFO researchers have decided to list the death date of George Brough as 1838/1841.
